| Pushing through the sand trap on the Dino-Flo Trail |
This is our last day. The oldest wakes up early and heads with
his dad to the bike rental shop. Based on yesterday’s experience at Slickrock and a new
understanding of our son’s skill set, we agree to let him ride Porcupine Rim
alone but he must have a full suspension bike. All of our bikes are hard tails. He
pays for the rental himself. It is not fair to the other children if we pay. My
husband drops him off at the trailhead. Unlike The Slickrock Trial, it is
deserted. Two riders appear. They invite him to join them on the ride. We do
not realize it but this is a gift. Part way through the ride he
gets a flat. The rental pump does not work. The two riders lend him theirs so
he can fix the bike. Meanwhile, I am at the pool with the children. I am a
worried
mother and anxious to see the oldest return. To our amazement, he appears
at 1:30, spot on time. Again, he has finished the ride in 2 hours and 15
minutes (that has included a flat tire). I think biking at Whistler has really
made a difference to his expertise and fitness. We scramble as a family and
head off to The Klondike Trail. We will squeeze in one last ride while he has
the rental. We ride the Dino-Flo trail. This is a moderate ride but it is
exhausting in the heat. My husband and the youngest son hike to the dinosaur
tracks. Someone in an open jeep gives them a ride. I’m not sure if the youngest
likes the dinosaur tracks or the jeep better. He hasn’t stopped talking about
the jeep ride on the slickrock.
