The Crack in the Mountain Trail

Monday, March 18th (Lake Havasu)

Molded walls in the crack in the mountain
More blazing heat and our feet sizzle on the pool deck. Like yesterday, I take time with the youngest to work on his swimming. He conquers it. He is swimming. I call down his dad and the older boys who are hiding in the air-conditioned room. “Watch,” I say without telling them why. The youngest tucks his head down and swims across the short side of the pool. The boys capture it on video. This is simply good.
Mom prepared to slide

We head back to the park again in the evening for more riding.  The oldest wants to try a more ambitious trail. We go up and then break to the side to worm our way around a cliff edge. This slim sliver of trail is precarious. I walk the bike s.l.o.w.l.y along the edge. We roller coast our way down the other side. I do dips I would never have intended but they come up too fast and I fly over them. I do not want to do this trail again. I just want to keep up with the boys so I don’t ruin their ride. Finally, we spot the husband and two youngest hiking down the gulch to the “crack in the mountain trail”. We drop the bikes and join them to climb through the lush pink moulded canyon walls and whoosh down the slick seven foot rockslide. It is described as, “one of the most famous slot canyons in the lower Colorado.” One visit is not enough. We will be back.
